The UK´s Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and its Aldermaston site manager were fined 22,000 pounds (U.S. $35,530) because of an accident when two employees inhaled plutonium during a glove box dismantling last December.
James Birch and Martin Tolson each received the average annual background radiation dose to the general public in the U.K. of 2,5 milli-Sieverts within a few seconds at Aldermaston on December 15, 1997, Newbury Magistrates Court fined UK´s Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and its Aldermaston site manager with 22,000 pounds (U.S. $35,530) in August 1998, because a medical expert testified that the inhaled plutonium increased the workers risk of cancer.
