Longest repair outage in Gemany
cost: 250 million DM (170 million US$)
1800 workers from 100 companies + 300 untility workers replaced 560 m (=75 t) ferritic piping in the fresh steam system which connected the RPV with the turbine, overhauled the turbine protection system, and recoated the pressure suppression chamber. Plant was restarted on 21.9.94 . Officials from Bayernwerk said that the exchange of piping in auxiliary system, which is now under way at Brunsbuetttel has been carried out at Isar in 1993.

Refueling accident. 47 ball bearings dumped into the open RPV, when the refueling machine telescope mast manipulator snapped off. the manipulator's plunge was broken by a refueling platform. The collision spilled scores of ball bearings from a rotation device on the platform into the open RPV. 45 bearings have been recovered with magnets. Unit was allowed to restart with 9 bearings still in the core. TUEV determined that the 9 bearings are not likely to be dislodged by the currents generated by recirculation, since they are assumed to be in inaccesible corners of the core "the costs (to find the bearings) would have been prohibitive with respect to the benefits accrued" in reactor safety.
